Orange Brook Country Club Notes

In 1926, Joseph W. Young, the visionary of Hollywood, decided to build his own golf course and he hired Ralph Young to design a 9-hole course. Six of the nine holes were complete when the hurricane of 1926 hit. The golf course was abandoned until June 1934, when the City of Hollywood purchased the property to build a golf course, since the only golf course in Hollywood at that time was a resort-private facility.

Starting in 1934, AJ Ewing supervised the creation of a 9-hole golf course using the footprints of the 1926 abandoned golf course and the 9-hole course, called the Municipal Golf Course, opened on February 1, 1935.

Ralph Young was hired to design the layout of another 9 holes, and the 18-hole golf course was opened on November 1, 1936. The work on the golf course was completed by WPA workers.

By 1938, the Municipal Golf Course was called Orange Brook Golf Course and hosted the 1938 Hollywood Open, a PGA event.

In 1956, another 9 holes were added to the Orange Brook County Club making it a 27-hole facility.

On December 26, 1961, the 4th set of 9-holes was opened, and the now 36 holes were divided into 2 golf courses - East Orange and West Orange. During the conversion from 18 holes to 36 holes, only 5 holes of the previous 18-hole layout were used in the new 36-hole layout.
