History

John O'Connor was the visionary of Colonial Palms Golf Course. He invested around $1M into the 55 acre project and was just about going to open the facility when Hurricane Donna hit in September, 1960 leaving the golf course under water for 6 weeks, killing its grass.

The course finally opened in January, 1961 with its $75,000 lighting system and at the time advertised itself as the world's longest illuminated golf course - 18 holes covering 3,396 yards. The mercury vapour lights were mounted in the palm trees on the golf course.

The facility also had a 25 station driving range, 2 miniature golf courses, a pro shop, dining room, lounge and a bar. It was open every day from 7 am till midnight.

The facility was sold in 1981 for around $1.4M and eventually became a mixture of residential housing and shopping plazas.
