Stanley Glaser hired Mark Mahannah to design a 18-hole golf course and construction on the Calusa Country Club began. Calusa Country Club opened in 1968 with a layout of 18 holes, par 72, 6824 yards.
On April 3, 1996, under new ownership, Calusa Country Club was renamed University Country Club and underwent renovations. The University Country Club had a layout of 18 holes, par 72, 7203 yards.
On December 14, 1999, the University Country Club was renamed Calusa Country Club.
In 2003, Calusa Country Club was purchased by Facundo Bacardi.
In 2006, it was planned to turn Calusa Country Club into a private course called the Fort Dallas Golf Club with a redesign by Tom Fazio, but the membership drive failed.
Since then ownership has tried to turn Calusa Country Club into building lots but a land covenant has put plans on hold.
By March 2011, Calusa Country Club was unkempt and had a layout of 18 holes, par 72, 7185 yards and was closed.
Currently, the course remains abandoned and is legally known as Fort Dallas Golf Club.
